I was fortunate enough to get a direct flight into Vienna. I started my flight on Tuesday, April 4th and arrived in the morning of April 5th. Getting from the airport to my hotel wasn’t too bad. Since I lived in Germany, I really like German style metro systems and find them very easy to use. I was able to easily take the Vienna CAT which is the “City Airport Train” that takes you straight from the airport to Vienna city center. From there, I was able to take metro trains to within 2 blocks of my hotel, the Hilton Vienna Plaza. Ashley had been at the hotel for just under a week by then so she was already well settled into the room when I arrived so I didn’t have to wait for a check in time.
Ashley had asked me what I wanted to do in Vienna while I was there. Since I had been to Vienna before (2011) and I knew that I would be jet lagged, what I really wanted was to drink German or Austrian beer and eat Wiener Schnitzel. So that’s what I did. Twice. We spent the day walking around, enjoying the nice weather. First, we walked to the Cafe Sacher at the Hotel Sacher to eat lunch and eat the famous Sacher Tort. There was a line outside of the cafe. After waiting in line, I was able to get my beer and schnitzel. For dessert, we both had a slice of the Sacher Tort.
We walked around a bit seeing things like the Parliament building and a park before returning to our hotel. Jet lagged, I took a short nap before dinner. We went out to dinner with Ashley’s co-coach at the 1516 Brewing Company. To get there, we took an Uber which turned out to be the fanciest interior of a taxi van that I’ve ever seen. You guessed it! I had more beer and schnitzel for dinner. Afterwards, we went to a bar with a bunch of the students for a bit before returning to the hotel to get ready for our flight the next day.
